Arousal vs. Drive in Nose Work

For dogs with naturally high arousal levels, excitement can sometimes create the same challenges we see with stress responses. While the emotion may be positive, the nervous system is still operating in a heightened state, and that can make it difficult for a dog to think clearly and perform effectively.


In scent work, this can show up in several different ways.


Some high-arousal dogs become busy and chaotic in their searches. They may race around the search area, bounce between potential areas of interest, or struggle to slow down long enough to commit to a specific odor problem. Their nose may be working, but their ability to process information and make deliberate choices is compromised by the intensity of their arousal.


Other dogs respond in the opposite way. Instead of searching outward, their focus becomes consumed by movement and the environment around them. They may fixate on running, scanning, or interacting with the surroundings rather than connecting with the odor puzzle in front of them.


In both cases, the issue is not a lack of desire or motivation. These dogs often want to work—they simply have more arousal than they can effectively channel into the task.


The goal is not to remove excitement from the work. Excitement is a valuable part of performance. The goal is to help the dog learn how to take that energy and direct it into thoughtful, focused searching.


My previous dogs naturally worked on the lower side of arousal, which comes with its own set of problem solving. They often needed help building excitement before they could truly perform at their best. Nyx, a 3yr old Beauceron, is an entirely different dog. She naturally works on the right side of the curve, and keeping her in a balanced state of mind is crucial to our ability to work any search area with any level of distraction.


This is also built on a very strong foundation of odor to begin with, these tips and tricks are not a replacement for the building blocks needed to have a strong searching dog. If your dog struggles even with a simple hide without any distractions around then some foundational work would be the starting point.


What Is the Yerkes-Dodson Law?

The Yerkes-Dodson Law describes the relationship between arousal and performance.


As arousal increases, performance improves—but only to a point. Once the dog's optimal arousal level is reached, any additional arousal actually begins to decrease performance.


We often say the dog is "in drive" when they have reached that perfect level of arousal. The dog's natural energy is channeled into the task, focus is at its highest, and performance is at its best.



Why This Matters for Different Types of Dogs

For many dogs, especially those with lower natural energy, the goal is to increase arousal before a search. We want to move them up the left side of the curve until they reach that sweet spot where they are fully engaged and ready to work.


This is where many handlers focus their training—building excitement and getting that blast at the start line to drive into odor. But not every dog fits that picture.


The High-Arousal Dog

Some dogs naturally live on the right side of the curve. These are the dogs we often describe as "high drive," but that's not always an accurate description. In reality, many of these dogs aren't displaying more drive—they're displaying more arousal.

There's an important difference.


When we talk about high arousal, we're describing the intensity of a dog's emotional and physiological state—not whether that emotion is positive or negative.

A dog can become highly aroused because they're thrilled to play fetch, anticipating a search, or entering the agility ring. They can also become highly aroused because they're fearful, anxious, or overwhelmed.


While the emotional experience is very different, the body's response is remarkably similar.


As arousal increases, the sympathetic nervous system—often called the "fight or flight" system—kicks into gear. Heart rate increases, breathing becomes faster, muscles tense, and stress hormones are released to prepare the body for action.

One of the first hormones released is adrenaline, which acts within seconds to increase alertness and readiness. Cortisol, another important stress hormone, rises more slowly and typically peaks about 20 to 40 minutes later, helping the body sustain that heightened state.


Research suggests that the nervous system responds primarily to the intensity of the experience rather than whether the emotion is pleasant or unpleasant. Whether a dog is exploding with excitement over a favorite toy or reacting to a frightening sound, the physiological response can look surprisingly similar.


This distinction is important because, from a training perspective, it's the level of arousal—not simply whether the dog is "happy" or "stressed"—that influences their ability to think, focus, and perform.


A dog can have tremendous energy without being mentally focused. High arousal simply means the dog's nervous system is highly activated. That energy may or may not be directed toward the task at hand.


For these dogs, adding even more excitement before a search can actually reduce performance. Instead of trying to increase arousal, our goal is often the exact opposite: helping the dog move back toward their optimal zone.


Managing Arousal vs. Changing Habits

There are two ways we can influence arousal.


The first is management. These strategies help in the moment, and we should always employ these management skills with all our dogs during classes or trials.


This includes things like:

  • Reducing unnecessary wait time before a run.

  • Building thoughtful pre-run routines.

  • Using impulse control exercises.

  • Avoiding situations that unnecessarily increase frustration.


The second approach is creating long-term habits.

Impulse control and management certainly plays a role, but there's another tool that often gets overlooked: Simplifying the work or search.


Why Easy Searches Build Better Focus

One of the most fascinating parts of the Yerkes-Dodson Law is that the curve isn't fixed. It actually shifts depending on how difficult the task is. Simple tasks can be performed successfully at much higher levels of arousal than complex tasks.


Think about your own life. You can probably carry on a casual conversation while you're excited or nervous. Solving a difficult math problem or making a complicated decision? That's much harder when your emotions are running high.


Dogs are no different.


Easy searches require less mental effort, allowing a dog to stay successful even when arousal is elevated. Repeated success also helps reduce anxiety surrounding work. As the dog develops confidence and positive expectations, arousal itself often begins to decrease over time.


In other words, calm, focused work becomes a habit.


How to Help a Dog Come Down After Exercise

Helping a dog recover from excitement and physical activity is just as important as providing the exercise itself. Think of it as a cooldown period for the nervous system—a chance for the body and brain to transition from a heightened state back into a state where the dog can relax, process information, and recover.


Effective decompression strategies include:


Sniffari Walks

Slow, unstructured walks where the dog is allowed to set the pace and choose what to investigate. Sniffing provides an opportunity for the dog to engage their natural behaviors while helping lower physiological arousal, including heart rate and cortisol levels.


Food Search Games

Activities such as scatter feeding, “find it” games, or hiding treats around an area encourage focused, purposeful searching. Pairing nose work with food can help shift the nervous system into a calmer state, and the act of eating itself can have a regulating effect.


Snuffle Mats and Puzzle Toys

These activities encourage slow, thoughtful engagement while allowing dogs to use their problem-solving skills in a controlled way. The combination of mental focus and repetitive behavior can help promote relaxation.


Long-Lasting Chews

Chewing is a natural self-soothing behavior for many dogs. Providing an appropriate long-lasting chew can help reduce arousal and give the dog an outlet for calming, repetitive behavior.


Lick-Based Enrichment

Licking activities, such as lick mats or frozen stuffed toys, can encourage relaxation through repetitive movement. These activities provide a calming outlet while helping dogs settle after excitement.


Calm Breathing and Connection

Some dogs respond to calm human presence and regulated breathing. Quiet interaction, slower movements, and a relaxed environment can help encourage the dog’s nervous system to shift toward recovery.


Settle-on-a-Mat Training

Teaching a predictable “relaxation station” gives dogs a clear behavior to perform when it is time to transition from activity to calm. A well-trained settle behavior becomes a valuable tool for helping dogs regulate their own arousal.


Calm Social Contact

Gentle petting, massage, or quiet physical contact can help support relaxation and strengthen the human-dog bond. For dogs who enjoy touch, these interactions can promote a shift toward the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s “rest and recover” state.


The goal of decompression is not to eliminate excitement or prevent high-energy behavior. Arousal is a normal and necessary part of performance. Instead, we want to teach dogs how to turn arousal on when needed and turn it back off afterward.

A dog who can recover well is better prepared to focus, learn, and perform the next time they are asked to work.


The Takeaway

When handlers struggle with focus on the task, it's tempting to assume the dog needs more motivation, more obedience, or more training.


Sometimes that's true. But often, the real issue isn't training at all. It's arousal.

Focus closely mirrors the performance side of the Yerkes-Dodson curve. If your dog can't stay engaged, ask yourself:

  • Is my dog's arousal level appropriate for this task?

  • Is the exercise too difficult for their current emotional state?

  • Could I build better focus by simplifying the work rather than making it harder?


The answer may surprise you. Sometimes the fastest path to better performance isn't raising your dog's excitement or doing more difficult searches.


It's helping them find the level of arousal where they can truly think and that work begins away from the start line.
